Exhibition at the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art
May 21 – July 10, 2010

On May 21, a major exhibition of Ukrainian contemporary art opens at the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art in Perm, Russia. 'ЯКЩО/ЕСЛИ/IF' will be the first large-scale show of Ukrainian art beyond that country's borders, and is the brainchild of the museum and the Moscow-based curator Ekaterina Degot.

The exhibition features art that reflects the distinctive contours of Ukrainian life after the Orange Revolution – an unstable but productive ferment, full of contradictions, promises from politicians, hope for a new post-Communist footing, and disenchantment with neoliberalism. Ukrainian art of that period is one facet of an outpouring of revolutionary and creative energy.

The main part of the exhibition showcases around 100 works by 30 artists. They are grouped into 4 sections: 'Maidan' focuses on political and public art. 'Wonderland' includes critical reflections on nationalism and bureaucratic notions of ethnic identity. 'Phantoms' shows visionary painting, and 'Dreamers' is for reflections on the social and emotional underpinnings of contemporary Ukraine.

Participating artists include Sergei Bratkov, Olexandr Gnylytsky, Arsen Savadov, and younger talents such as Zhanna Kadyrova and the R.E.P. and Soska groups.

A special section of the exhibition – 'Histories' – explores unofficial Soviet art from the 1980s until the beginning of the 1990s, a formative time for today's artists. There are Ukrainian paintings from the collection of Marat Guelman, conceptual and naive art from the collection of the Odessa- and Kiev-based artist and curator Alexandr Roytburd, and an exposition of the Kharkov school of underground photography, which gave rise to Boris Mikhailov and Sergei Bratkov.

The show opens with lectures and discussions with Ukrainian artists. Some elements of the project will be staged in the city itself, and there will be a catalog in Russian and English.


Support for the exhibition is provided by the ArtKhronika Cultural Fund in Moscow and the New Collection Fund for the Support of Cultural Projects in Perm. The official insurance partner is OAO Alphastrakhovanie.

THE BEGINNING

This year, 2010, the FIFA Football World Cup will be held in South Africa. Newspapers and magazines are teeming with articles and photographs of South Africa. There are extensive media coverage of the sports facilities which the South African government has erected to host this global event. I saw colour photographs of the massive new football stadium in Cape Town. Seen from the air the concrete stadium looks like a solid mandala that has fallen from the sky: a beautiful structure with the famous Table Mountain in the background.
The photo of the stadium that I saw was probably taken from the upper storey of a tall buildiing: a modernist skyscraper in the Greenpoint district of Cape Town where Adam Nankervis and I stayed during the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial. The year was 1997. I was a DAAD artist in Berlin. The year before Adam Nankervis started MUSEUM MAN in Prenzlauerberg in East Berlin. MUSEUM MAN has since become a nomadic museum of contemporary art from all parts of the world.
Cuban curator and art historian Gerardo Mosquera (a previous director of the Habana Biennial in Cuba) invited Adam Nankervis and me to participate in the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial which was directed by Okwui Enwezor in 1997.
Gerardo Mosquera installed the works of the artists he personally invited in the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Brazilian scuptor Cildo Meireles greeted us when we arrived at the gallery. Cildo had finished his installation and there was just enough time for him to say 'Hello' to us and for him to catch a plane to America.
Adam and I created installations inside the Johannesburg Art Gallery, participatory installations in relation to the theme "Trade Winds" , the theme of the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial. In the centre of our twin installations was a large circular table on which we invited the spectators to the show to put anything on it in exchange for anything they find on the table. One person put a book of Nelson Mandela's speeches which another person exchanged for his expensive wrist watch. I told the director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery that perhaps someone from Soweto might come and bring a goat and exchange it for a chair by Gerrit Rietveld which is in the gallery's collection. Alas, that did not happen.
During the first week of the Johannesburg Biennial, Adam and I went to Cape Town.We stayed in a bed and breakfast inn beneath the Table Mountain. One bright sunny morning Adam and I sailed from Cape Town on a sail boat accompanied by a small crew of sailors and cameramen and women. We sailed past the Cape of Good Hope towards Cape Point: to the place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. It was the place where dolphins, sharks and whales mate.
From our boat Adam and I unfolded a colourful piece of cotton cloth above the waters. The winds helped Adam and me in shaping the billowing cloth into the letter "C" - the initial letter of Cape Town. A video was made of our event, which was part of our on-going project entitled "The Secret History of the Mondrian Fan Club". We took the video back to Johannesburg and showed it in our twin installations inside the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
We returned to Cape Town and stayed, the second time round, in the tall skyscraper-like modernist building at Greenpoint. During our second stay in Cape Town Adam and I created impromptu events in different parts of the city. In one event we joined a chorus of wandering singers in the city centre. In another part of the town I did an impromptu in front of a shop with the sign "A Stitch in Time". Adam did an impromptu in front of a school surrounded by a cement wall topped with a fence of barbed wire and a sign saying the barbed wire was electrified.
One day we joined artists, art critics, art historians, and art curators, who came down from Johannesburg to Cape Town, in a boat trip to Robben Island. Robben Island was where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated during the apartheid regime in South Africa. At Robben Island, the international art community conducted an impromptu conference in homage to Nelson Mandela inside one of the halls of the former island prison. Afterwards Adam and I explored the jail cells where political opponents of the apartheid regime were locked up. It was an eerie experience. I was reminded of Franz Kafka's 'The Penal Colony'. Paradoxically it was also an exhilarating experience, for apartheid had ended and the empty jail cells were mute witnesses to past state crimes while at the same time they were very real testaments to the fact that injustice could end, did end for Nelson Mandela and his fellow freedom fighters, and thus freedom can be accomplished.
It was on the boat trip to Robben Island that I conceived of the idea of the London Biennale. I discussed the idea with Adam Nankervis on our way back to Cape Town. We continued discussing the idea when we got back to Berlin.
Over the years as as an artist I have participated in many international cultural events such as Documenta in Kassel, Germany, 'Air Art' at the University of California in Berkeley Art Museum, 'Fluxattitudes' at the New Museum in New York, , 'Live/Life' at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 'l'Inform' at the Cntre Pompidou in Paris, and in many art festivals and exhibitions all over the world. I felt that the nature of a famous cultural event such as the Venice Biennale, because of its rigid structure of selecting artists through national institutions, did not make it possible for artists who are citizens of countries without national pavillions in Venice, or artists who live the lives of exiles, migrants or refugees, artists with little or no 'profiles' in the art market, have very little chance to show their works and participate in the most prestigious of art biennales: the Venice Biennale. For many years, in the art circles of America and Europe, I was described as a 'marginal artist' (albeit with the cynosure 'par excellence') by French art critic Pierre Restany (ideologue of 'nouveau realisme') and Harald Szeemann, the curator of DOCUMENTA 5. At Cape Town in 1997I thought it was time to create a viable and memorable platform for the world's 'marginal artists', and that, initially, was the inspiration for the LONDON BIENNALE, a biennale that would be open to every artist regardless of age, sex, ethnic origin, and artistic language or style.
The first London Biennale was held in the year 2000, at the start of the new millenium, an auspicious time for an auspicious occasion. Shortly afterwards, Adam Nankervis, who is the internationl coordinator of the London Biennale, suggested that we do 'Pollinations' in different parts of the world during the years in-between London Biennale years. The first LB Pollination was 'Rio Trajetorias' coordinated by Cristiana de Melo in Rio Janeiro, Brazil. Other LB Pollinations have taken place in Berlin, New York, Rome, Ponte Nossa in Cremona, and other places around the globe.
Adam Nankervis also suggested several inter-active participatory projects such as the 'Flag-genations' (LBAs making and unfolding their personally designed flags over Tower Bridge in London, and other bridges all over the world), SIGNALS and the current SATELLITE EVENTS.

Now, at Adam Nankervi' initiative, we have a page in FACEBOOK in which I invite all LBAs to download news and photographs of their exhibitions and events.

This year being the year of the sixth LONDON BIENNALE and also, coincidentally, the year of the FIFA Football World Cup, I have been reflecting on the different effects of cultural and sporting events on people all over the world. I read a recent article in The Guardian how ambulant food vendors who traditionally have been selling inexpensive food and refreshments in the areas in South Africa where new stadia have been erected to house the football games will be asked to move away from the usual places where they have traditionlly sold cheap food and drinks to make way for officially approved caterers.
In another article, also in The Guardian newspaper of England, I read that in building a stadium in New Delhi for the coming Commonweath Games scheduled for later this year 2010, the Indian government has moved over 100,000 people from their homes to be 'relocated' elsewhere.
These two examples of uncaring behaviour by governments disgust me.
Since ancient times, since the times of the ancient Greeks and the ancient Romans, sporting games were organised by governments to proclaim and celebrate their powers. There have been. and doubtless there are, positive gains for the citizens of the countries where the games are held. In the realm of art, for example, the ancient Olympian games and the ancient Roman sporting competitions as well, gave us beautiful sculptures of athletes.
However, I look forward to the time, hopefully in the near future, when sporting events such as the FIFA Football World Cup in South Africa, will be of benefit not only to well-heeled sports fans also to the poorer and deprived citizens of the countries who sponsor such events.
One of the actions I admired the writer Andre Malraux for, when he was the Minister of Culture of the government of French president Charles de Gaulle, was the time he, Malraux, advised the imperious General de Gaulle, that instead of the French government building more stadia, the French government should build more cultural centres in France. Malraux pointed out to de Gaulle that dictators such as Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin revelled in building grandiose stadia. De Gaulle heeded Malraux's advice. The result was the building of Maisons de la Jeune Culture (Houses of Young Culture, i.e., centres for young artists) all over France. Many of those Maisons de la Jeune Culture has since been transformed into Centres of Contemporary Art in different regions of France. A few years ago Adam Nankervis and I gave performances at the vernissage of a memorable solo exhibition by Cyril Lepetit at WHARF, the cultural centre of lower Normandy, in Caen.
On the third Saturday of August this year, the 21st of August 2010, I will initiate a symposium in a boat (while sailing on the waters of the river Thames) which will be on this topic of culture and sporting events. This will be one of three different events on the river Thames in the month of August, plus Katie Sollohub's 'Long Shore Drift' at Shoreham on Sea in Sussex on the second Saturday of August (the 14th of August 2010) which, cumulatively, will form the finale of LONDON BIENNALE 2010.
The other two riverine events are a 'despedida' (farewell party) on Saturday, the 7th of August 2010, in the afternoon, at Deptford, for Alma Tischler Wood and Professor John Wood who will leave for an 8-month long sabbatical in South Korea.
On Saturday, the 28th of August 2010, at 4 p.m., I am inviting Bryan Mulvilhill of Vancouver, Canada, to give a world tea party by the Chinese Pagoda at Kew Gardens.
All artists and art lovers are joyously welcome to join in these free events of LONDON BIENNALE 2010.

The artist Seamus Farrell, opens his studio, a converted laundrette in Paris, to
artists with whom he collaborates on a variety of projects. The first exhibition of this
kind took place in January 2010 with a projection of documentary shorts by Mohssin
Harraki, Mason, the second artist invited into the space, chose to test a new prototype of
rotary camera showing ten colour photographs taken in the suburbs of Marrakech. The
space allowed the artist the specific requirement he needed for setting up this particular
device. Seamus Farrell chose to make the space open to the public on request in order to
provide a more personal experience and moment between the work and the viewer. An
artist’s studio such as this is a space for both the fabrication of ideas and the returning of
experiences according to a set calendar. It is along this line of thought that the English
artist Peter Fillingham accepted this invitation.

For this third collaboration, Peter Fillingham has focused his attention on the
assemblage of everyday objects, returning to question the use and function of the object.
It has now been four years since Peter Fillingham moved to Saint Ouen, a suburb of
Paris that reminds him of his hometown in England. Saint Ouen offers many possibilities.
The working space on Rue Claude Monet becomes part of daily activities, as its doors
literally open up onto the street, making this working space a part of everyday life.

This partnership between Peter Fillingham and the Laundrette makes evident, that the
studio is first and foremost a space for production and testing certain devices. He is
fascinated by the functionality of objects and the misappropriation, which they offer. The
particular aesthetic association of each object and how they are used, how we live with
them according to the era from which they originate. He has a strong relationship and
interest in his living space and equally with his own working space as an artist. In his
work there is a certain intimacy which expresses itself through the way people arrange
their spaces both in their public and private lives.
This work anchored by its autobiographical ties, presents memories of shopping as a
family ritual. “It is one thing to consume an object, and another to question how one uses
an object and the associations that we make for such things. I question my everyday life,
this is the main body of my work.”

The work installed in the Laundrette comprises of three components. The first (Untitled
2010) is a large format television from the 1980s, which shows a series of
autobiographical photographs with subtle references to the wealth of his previous
collaborations (such as with the director Derek Jarman or the artist David Medalla or
the curator Peter Lewis).
The second component entitled “Something that will last forever” 2010 is taken from the
artist’s collection of things, which also features within the previous work. Thirdly, an
arrangement of bottles of Sherry and Sherry glasses.

“What is important is the mixture of objects, as aged as they are beautiful. I see them as a
collection of objects that have to remain as one; together they assume a different life.
Like a tomb of my belongings, a sort of archive, but one can imagine that it could be a
kind of baptism or celebration.”

Cyril Lepetit's work is about the intimate and the very public. It's about the things we want, the things we can do, and the things that we do anyway. Paintings, sculptural elements, live actions and video works often articulate a journey through desire.

For his exhibition at Danielle Arnaud Contemporary, he will present a series of works responding to the London family home as well as its outside world.

The starting point of this show will be his last piece, Technotrans, a work developed in between France and England. This sound based piece was created with asylum seekers & refugees. They were asked to sing a song from their home country and an English one that they may have known before entering the UK. The recordings were then presented as a dj mix in the back of a lorry at a truck transport industry convention in France, also known as Technotrans.

GLOW II: Rites of Spring

GLOW manifests from a winter’s hearth of cinematic program and video installation to a new program exploring the rite of spring’s luminescence and life.
Hedonism, transcendence, utopias (lost and found), idylls and euphoria(s) explored.
Over 20 artists from Berlin and the international arena will participate in the program.
The Narrative program will begin every two hours in the intimacy of The Z-Bar Kino, while non-narrative works play in the main room throughout.
Over the course of three nights an individual artist has been invited for a specific installation within the space of GLOW.

GLOW curators Adam Nankervis, Gillian Morris and founder and initiator of GLOW, Leo Kuelbs are pleased to announce that the GLOW, manifest in January 2010, was attended by over 200 visitors and has generated much excitement.
Biographies:
Leo Kuelbs

has presented a variety of works in private living spaces, emphasizing the connection and blurring the boundary between art (as objects, spectacle and business) and daily life. This “Living Gallery” concept began in New York in 2006 and is now expanding to Berlin, spring of 2010.

Public shows include “The End. And…” at Frederico Seve Gallery in New York (2009), a four-channel video installation titled “Luminous Flux” at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn (2009) and “Applied Kinetics” video projection on the Manhattan Bridge (2008).
Gillian Morris

has worked since 2000 as a translator and editor specializing in art. She has collaborated with curators on catalogues and publications for a large number of institutions and publishing houses including Daimler Kunstsammlung, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Du Mont Verlag, Hatje Cantz Verlag, Kunsthalle Bremen, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Museo Renia Sofia, Museum Ludwig, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin and The Essl Collection.

After being based in Hamburg for many years, she moved to Berlin in 2006 to set up a gallery to support young artists working in the media video and installation. Following two years in the temporary gallery space in the Brunnenstrasse and participation in a series of art fairs including Viennafair, Loop Video Fair Barcelona, Art Athina and Open Space/Art Cologne, the gallery format has now been abandoned in favour of a curatorial concept that maintains the strong emphasis on video and installation art.
Adam Nankervis

is an artist and independent curator. His practice has infused artistic, conceptual and curatorial practice in his lived in nomadic museum, Museum MAN, which renders the ready made, the habitated box, an apartment, to the navigation of the expanse of museum into an installation of threads of multifarious artists and artistic practice into a whole.

Adam Nankervis has participated in Johannesburg Biennale, curated by Gerardo Mesquera and Okwai Enwazor 1997 collaborating with artist David Medalla-The Mondrian Fan Club, Life-Live. Musee Art Moderne de La Ville Paris 1995, curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, solo exhibitions include Los Angeles Biennale 2001, London Biennale 2009-2010 as International Coordinator.

Vom 30. April bis 02. Mai 2010 stellt das stilwerk Berlin, parallel zum Berliner GALLERY WEEKEND, ausgewählte Ausstellungsstücke teilnehmender Künstler aus, welche ihre Werke unter den Titel HYPERNATURAL gestellt haben. Unter anderem von Olivia Berckemeyer, Amélie Grözinger, Astrid Kruse Jensen, Antonia Low, Marco Meiran, Fiona Michie, Adam Nankervis, Tommy, Støckel oder Malte Urbschat.

Nach dem großen Erfolg von „Das Unheimliche“ im Jahr 2009, setzen das KUNST Magazin und der Kurator Florian Müller-Klug ihre Kooperation nun in diesem Jahr fort:

Zum Berliner Gallery Weekend 2010 wird die Ausstellung „Hypernatural“ am Donnerstag, den 29. April, um 19 Uhr im 3. OG des stilwerk Berlin eröffnet. Im Anschluss daran feiert das KUNST Magazin die „4 Jahre KUNST Magazin - Party“.

Der Ausstellungstitel „Hypernatural“ spielt mit der Verbindung der Begriffe „hyper“ (von griech. „über“) und „natural“ (von engl. „die Natur betreffend“). Die Künstler setzen sich mit den kreativen Grenzen des zugleich Imaginären und Realen auseinander: mit dem, was als natürliches Phänomen vorkommt, sowie mit den transzendentalen Sätzen, die auf das Phänomen bezogen werden können. Das Unerklärbare oder Unbegreifliche, das Geheimnisvolle und Verwunschene, das Verborgene und Unsichtbare bis zum Abgrund des Grauens und des Abyss werden zum Thema gemacht und mit einem breiten Medienspektrum bearbeitet.

Come and bring friends to the opening of LONDON BIENNALE 2010 on the First of May at 5 p.m. at Soho Square in Central London.

Adam Nankervis, our international coordinator and the intrepid director of the nomadic MUSEUM MAN, will deliver the welcome address. After we welcome each other and exchange information about our diverse artistic activities and projects, we will take a short walk to the ANGEL PUB (beside St. Giles Church, behind the tall Centre Point building on Tottenham Court Road). In the saloon bar and in the garden of the Angel Pub we will conitnue our congenial conversations. Please bring with you cameras and darwing materials to document this event.

LONDON BIENNALE 2010 will run until the end of August this year. There will be many events and exhibitions.
Maddy and James Kinghorn will bring a group of artists from Barcelona, Spain to London.
Mabel Encinas is organising events in homage to Brazilian educator Paulo Freire during the Latin American Cultural Week at the University of London's Student Uniion from 17 to the 20th of May 2010.
Stephen Perkins, from the University of Wisconsin, will bring to England a group of American artists.
Marko Stepanov will host a poetry recital organised by Sarah O'Reilly at Marko's bucolic allotment at West Hendon.
Katie Sollohub will host another "Long Shore Drift" on the first week-end in August at Shore-on-Sea in Sussex.
There will also be many international satellite events celebrating LONDON BIENNALE 2010 including:
A tea party which Mary Sherman will organise with Trans-Cultural Exchange at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Cafe in Boston, Massachusetts, USA;
Exhibitions and events which Dominic Cloutier will organise with the Hybrid Art Collective in New York City;
'SIGNALS' events in Berlin, Germany, and Kiev, Ukraine.

"Meine Freundin ist es, manchmal auch mein Freund, der seine Kleidung nach Maß arbeitet. Er ist ganz nah dran am Glamour und gleichzeitig aus Fragmenten gebastelt. Er findet und setzt ein, in sein Puzzle, was sich Leben nennt. Ein Stück an die Wand und das nächste auf den Boden, eine Blume im Haar und hinter Glas im Schrank, da muss sie auch im Gemälde auftauchen. Um Details zu erinnern, schreibt er sie auf; eine Notiz und ein neues Bild an der Wand, einen Stein aus Glas auf der Brust und im Spiegel meine Kamera. Er malt sich sein Leben aus." A.T.

Über die fotografischen Serien von Anja Teske - von Frank Wagner

Beim Versuch des Verstehens dieser besonderen Art der fotografischen Werke kommt mir der bekannte Aphorismus „die größten Ereignisse, das sind nicht unsere lautesten, sondern unsere stillsten Stunden“ von Friedrich Nietzsche in den Sinn.

Schon ihre Arbeit über das Hotel Balzer machte mit der hohen Sensibilität der fotografischen Arbeitsweise von Anja Teske bekannt. Die Künstlerin hat eine besondere Eigenart ihr Gegenüber - sei es nun ein Raum, eine Ansammlung von Gegenständen oder eine Person - zu fotografieren, als rutschte es gerade aus dem Bild und würde doch behutsam gehalten. Dieser Eindruck entsteht durch die eigenwilligen Anschnitte, die leicht gekippte Blickachse und ein sachtes Aus-der-Mitte-Rücken. Es ist ein vorsichtig schweifender Blick, der kaum innezuhalten wagt und dennoch höchstes Interesse für die sich ihr bietende Situation bezeugt. Alle ihre Fotografien wirken wie mit größter Vorsicht aufgenommen. Seien es die erwähnten, stillen Aufnahmen, die Anja Teske kurz vor der Entrümpelung und dem Abriss des Hotels in Bad Ems machte, die ungemein meditativen Portraits von Menschen in mitten einer Kirche, oder aber die laute Serie der Kalamitäten mit Staubsaugern, die zwar unruhig, kraftvoll und gespannt, aber ebenso fragil wirken. Oder ihre Arbeit mit Juwelia. Alles bleibt flüchtig und dennoch für den Moment und damit für die fotografische Ewigkeit konserviert. Es könnte auch sein, dass den aufgenommenen Menschen wie den Interieurs etwas zu entgleiten droht: Zeit, Würde, Geltung - oder dass augenblicklich etwas entgleist. Alles wirkt gefasst und gleichzeitig labil.

Dadurch kann sie Nähe und Abstand, Intimität und Diskretion gleichzeitig in ihren Fotos hervorheben. Es entsteht für den Betrachter ein kaum zu lösender Zustand der Spannung. Das Bekannte wirkt fremd, das Vertraute nur etwas entrückt und dadurch unheimlich. Sie erzeugt damit Interesse und Neugier und fordert Sensibilität, jedoch bleibt alles im Vagen, als seien es Momente in der Schwebe - und die Aufgenommenen könnten sich schon nicht mehr an das Geschehene, das Wie und Wo erinnern. Alles ist konzentriert und dennoch flüchtig. Sie setzt den „Decisive Moment“, um den sich doch, seit Henry Cartier-Bresson ihn versucht hat zu definieren, häufig alles dreht in der Fotografie, außer Kraft, indem sie die Bestimmtheit und die Balance in Frage stellt.

Anja Teske gelingt mit ihrer besonderen fotografischen Begabung das Sich-Gewahr-Werden und das Abhandenkommen von Stille, die Sehnsucht nach Ruhe, wie das Innehalten, das Heraustreten aus der realen Welt, um ganz bei sich selbst zu sein, das Ersterben oder auch das Erkennen innerer wie äußerer Leere, festzuhalten. Dieser Moment neben der Spur, der alle ergreift, die vor der Kamera, wie die Betrachter, kann sich im Abbild einstellen. Das macht die Werke so kostbar.

First coined a couple of centuries ago to describe a weird and mysterious disease unknown to the physicians of the day, “Nostalgia” became the vogue word among the trendy and the avant garde in the period of austerity that followed the Second World War. Only on the cusp of our own century has it acquired a more material connotation.

Today it’s everywhere: whether the retro thrust of an empty stylistic gesture or a more earnest longing for a lost home recaptured through collected objects, the present is shot through with splinters of the past. A past we build in our imagination.

In an increasingly globalised and dislocated existence we long for continuity, clutching at idealised fragments of the past in an attempt to build something reassuring and real in the present. Nostalgia particularly re-emerges as a defence mechanism in a time of accelerated change and upheaval. Doesn’t really matter if it’s true or false; it’s a place we want to be: anywhere but here. But to articulate what is past does not mean to recognize “how it really was”. Nostalgia for childhood doesn’t necessarily mean that childhood was happy. But it does seem simpler.

We want reassurance, an escape from this world that assails us. Some might seek the England of the past they can no longer recognise in the the Union Jack in better times than now; others the values of then rather than now. Some make an aesthetic connection with a more optimistic time, a time of steadfast belief in a better future. It’s more about invention than memory: we put together the fragments we seek or think we remember in the ideal cosy world of back then to create a world of our imagination we can inhabit. The ideal world of the remembered or imagined past becomes the real world of our imagination.

Some escape to the fantasy of their imagination, others to the religious fantasy. It’s all just as real – or not – as we want it to be.

GLOW manifests from a winter’s hearth of cinematic program and video installation to a new program exploring the rite of spring’s luminescence and life.
Hedonism, transcendence, utopias (lost and found), idylls and euphoria(s) explored.
Over 20 artists from Berlin and the international arena will participate in the program.
The Narrative program will begin every two hours in the intimacy of The Z-Bar Kino, while non-narrative works play in the main room throughout.
Over the course of three nights an individual artist has been invited for a specific installation within the space of GLOW.

GLOW curators Adam Nankervis, Gillian Morris and founder and initiator of GLOW, Leo Kuelbs are pleased to announce that the GLOW, manifest in January 2010, was attended by over 200 visitors and has generated much excitement.
Biographies:
Leo Kuelbs

has presented a variety of works in private living spaces, emphasizing the connection and blurring the boundary between art (as objects, spectacle and business) and daily life. This “Living Gallery” concept began in New York in 2006 and is now expanding to Berlin, spring of 2010.

Public shows include “The End. And…” at Frederico Seve Gallery in New York (2009), a four-channel video installation titled “Luminous Flux” at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn (2009) and “Applied Kinetics” video projection on the Manhattan Bridge (2008).
Gillian Morris

has worked since 2000 as a translator and editor specializing in art. She has collaborated with curators on catalogues and publications for a large number of institutions and publishing houses including Daimler Kunstsammlung, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Du Mont Verlag, Hatje Cantz Verlag, Kunsthalle Bremen, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Museo Renia Sofia, Museum Ludwig, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin and The Essl Collection.

After being based in Hamburg for many years, she moved to Berlin in 2006 to set up a gallery to support young artists working in the media video and installation. Following two years in the temporary gallery space in the Brunnenstrasse and participation in a series of art fairs including Viennafair, Loop Video Fair Barcelona, Art Athina and Open Space/Art Cologne, the gallery format has now been abandoned in favour of a curatorial concept that maintains the strong emphasis on video and installation art.
Adam Nankervis

is an artist and independent curator. His practice has infused artistic, conceptual and curatorial practice in his lived in nomadic museum, Museum MAN, which renders the ready made, the habitated box, an apartment, to the navigation of the expanse of museum into an installation of threads of multifarious artists and artistic practice into a whole.

Adam Nankervis has participated in Johannesburg Biennale, curated by Gerardo Mesquera and Okwai Enwazor 1997 collaborating with artist David Medalla-The Mondrian Fan Club, Life-Live. Musee Art Moderne de La Ville Paris 1995, curator Hans Ulrich Orbrist, solo exhibitions include Los Angeles Biennale 2001, London Biennale 2009-2010 as International Coordinator.

) my drawing for my project of a monumental sculpture in homage to
Mondrian and Malevich. Inside a tall building large kinetic neon
sculptures of Mondrian and Malevich are projected upon the glass
windows. I made the drawing in New York City last year (2009). It is
related to an art work I made of young Mondrian gazing through
multi-coloured stripes on a window. The drawing was included in the
exhibition "Strip/Stripes" curated by Joao Simoes at the Emily Harvey
Foundation in New York City last year.
2) a black and white
photo of my sculpture entitled "Homonculus, 1", together with the text
of a letter I wrote on 1 March 2020 to Adam Nankervis. This small
sculpture is part of a new series of art works in many media (drawings,
paintings, collegaes, sculptures, installations and performances) which
are collectively entitled "Angels and Homonculi". They are my homages
to the alchemists of East and West and to the Illuminati of Past,
Present and Future. Like many of my previous art works, such as the
first bubble machine and the first 'Stitch in Time', I start a new
series with a small object. This is true in the case of "Angels and
Homonculi" and the monumental neon sculptures in homage to Mondrian and
Malevich.

Estimados, quien les escribe es Gonzalo Rabanal y junto con saludarlos les doy las gracias a los muchos amigos que nos han llamado, escrito, para saber de nosotros después de la enorme cataclismo que nos ha tocado vivir. Decirles que en Santiago la situación esta controlada y que solo los hermanos del sur (región del Maule y Bio-bio) viven la desolación, la incertidumbre y el caos, producto de las muchas razones que no vale la pena profundizar.

Frente a este escenario puedo decir que vivimos el duelo y esa conmoción de desazón emocional y espiritual pasará en la medida que todo retorne a la calma. Porque la destrucción de esta tragedia ha dejado a muchos separados y fracturados con la realidad familiar, este duelo nos ha despojado de los sueños e interrumpe nuestro futuro. Lo que era, ya no es más. Lo que concebíamos ayer, hoy ya no se sustenta. Nos ha cambiado la vida irremediablemente. Mientras el mundo avanza, el propio se ha detenido y venido a bajo. El tiempo no adelanta.

Finalmente decirles que esta experiencia es una prueba más de coraje y de fuerza del espíritu humano y nos recuerda la inestabilidad de la vida. Pudimos perder muchas cosas, se nos vinieron abajo muchos sueños, se nos cayeron nuestras casas, pero no se nos han caído nuestros brazos. Seguiremos adelante!!!

Invito a todos los amigos, artistas y performistas a sumarse a esta campaña y colaborar con esta cruzada de ayuda para los miles de Chilenos que lo han perdido todo después de esta terrible tragedia.

Thank you very much to all of you who have either called or written us to know about our situation after the enormous cataclism ( giant earthquake) we lived here in Chile. In Santiago the situation is almost controlled but in the regions at the south of Santiago, our brothers from Maule’s region and Bio Bio’s region are still suffering the effects of this devastation: they live desolation, uncertainty and chaos. They are with no food, no water, no power, no medicines, no hospitals because were collapsed. etc.

Against this background I can say that we are experiencing the grief and the shock of emotional and spiritual distress that will extend until everything return to calm. Because the destruction of this tragedy has left many separated from their loveones and fractured with their family’s reality. This mourning has stripped us of our future dreams and interrupts our future’s plans, just suddenly. What is was is no longer, is not anymore. What we conceived yesterday today is not supported. Our lives have changed irreparably , while the rest of the world progresses, our has been arrested and gone down. Finally I want to say that this experience is further proof of courage and strength of human spirit and reminds us the fragility of life.

We could lose a lot of material things, we came down many dreams, we dropped our houses, but we have not dropped our arms.

We will go ahead!! …. with the high spirit in the face of adversity. I invite all friends, artists and performers to join us in this campaign and working with this crusade to help the thousands of Chileans who have lost everything after this terrible tragedy. -Grupo “Ayuda para Llico” – Santiago, Oriente: Un grupo de universitarios está organizando por Facebook una recolección de especies para entregar en el sector de Llico, Iloca y Duao, afectados por un enorme Tsunami.

Para quienes quieran donar sangre estos puntos atenderán de 09:00 a 17:00 Hrs. En otras ciudades del país se puede donar en los bancos de sangre de los hospitales respectivos.

WHITE SNUFF sees the beginning of a collaboration of hi/low queer science+arts by a group of Berlin based artists,and invited artistsfrom the international arena who are staging a one night event in Ackerkeller Berlin.

The artists explore different themes of exposing the beauty and its shadows from behind the glass darkly.Hangings,performance,video and mural installations and a big premier and launch party will make up the night WHITE SNUFF.

WHITE SNUFF fanzine by Elmar Kaiser will be first issued at the WHITE SNUFF event.

Mit seiner langen Tradition von Veranstaltungen, Partynächten, DJ Sessions und Treffen zählt der Ackerkeller zu einer der angestammten Berliner Institutionen, der mit den letzten politischen Umstrukturierungen sich nun konfrontiert sieht, geschlossen bzw. an einen anderen Ort verpflanzt zu werden.

'ACEPHALE'

When I saw the image of a headless man on the flyer of the multi-media exhibition 'WHITE SNUFF' which Adam Nankervis is curating at Ackerkelle in Berlin, I remembered a number of things.
Firstly I remembered the time when Adam and I were in the centre of Rome in 2005. While waiting for a bus to take us to the home of Adam's friends Filippo Ceccarelli and Elena Polidori at Trastevere, we wandered into a church whose inner facade was covered with fragments of ancient marble sculpture like a large 3-dimensional collage in stone. We entered the church and saw, in a side chapel, a glass altar in which was stored the decapitated head of St. John the Baptist. There was no explanation of how the head of John the Baptist got there. From the palace of Herod Antipas in Judea to the side chapel in Rome is a long journey by any standard, possible only by means of a miraculous route through space and time.
The head of John the Baptist was the prize Salome demanded from King Herod after she performed her Dance of the Seven Veils. In the 19th century writers and artists were obsessed by the story of Salome and John the Baptist. The interest hovered between necrophilia and destructive eroticism.
Gustave Moreau depicted Salome in jewel-like encrustations of paint. Maud Allan was celebrated for her Dance of the Seven Veils.
Stephane Mallarme and Oscar Wilde were two writers who wrote about Salome. Mallarme's monologue expressed in exquisite symbolist poetry the frustration and the erotic longing Salome felt for the wild saint who baptised Jesus Christ (the Messiah) in the river Jordan. The scene of that baptism, as depicted in Piero della Francesca's painting (now in the National Gallery in London), was the inspiration for a performance entitled 'Four Aces' which I gave (with the participation of twelve handsome young men) at the Swiss Institute in New York City, curated by Mathieu Copeland for 'Peforma 7' in 2007.
Oscar Wilde's 'Salome' was transformed into a great opera by Richard Strauss.
Of the many depictions of the decapitated John the Baptist the most powerful is the painting by Caravaggio.
After seeing the head of St. John the Baptist I remembered the first (and only) time I saw a severed head. It was a shrunken head on a wooden pike stuck into the ground on a promontory (the boundary between the Ifugao and Igorot tribes) above the magnificent rice terraces of the Mountain Province of the Philippines. That was in 1951, probably the last time when the mountain tribes of the Philippines practised head-hunting as part of their tribal rituals and wars. I was ten years old, a student from the lowlands, at St. Mary's School, a school ran by Episcopalian missionaries, in the town of Sagada near Bontoc. The mountain tribes of Luzon island subsequently converted into oppositing kinds of Christianity: Roman Catholicism, preached mainly by Belgian fathers, and different branches of Protestantism, preached by various sects, mainly American in origins. The Episcopalians who ran St. Mary's School in Sagada came from New England.
When I first arrived in Paris in the spring of 1960, I visited the Cathedral of Notre Dame. I was surprised to find one of the sculptures at the entrance to the cathedral was a headless man who carried his had in his hand. I found out later that the headless man was Saint Denis, one of the two patron saints of Paris. The other was Saint Genevieve. I thought how strange: to be walking around, carriying one's head in one's hand. Chopping the heads of kings and queens and of criminals has long been in the DNA of the French.
A few years later my friend Christian Ledoux told me that his friend Philipp Garrell has made a film entitled 'Acephale' ('Headless'). I have not yet seen the film, which has long been a part of the classics of French underground cinema of the 60s. I will ask Hermine Demoriane (who is also a friend of Philipp Garrell) to tell me what 'Acephale' is about. Perhaps she can help me find a DVD copy of the film.
Hermine Demoriane runs the Chateau de Sacy in Picardie, France. Adam Nankervis will become an artist in residence there in the summer of this year 2010. I wonder if Adam will carry some remnant of the "White Snuff" show he is curating in Berlin to Chateau de Sacy in France. Or will the headless naked man on the flyer of the Berlin show accompany Adam to France. I wonder. Dans le monde d'art et de la poesie, toute est possible.

GLOW manifests from a winters hearth of cinematic program and ambient
installation in Berlin, to a new program exploring the rite of Spring's
luminescence and life.



In this latest incarnation of GLOW, curators Adam Nankervis, Gillian Morris
and founder and initiator of GLOW, Leo Kuelbs invite video and new media
artists to respond in both narrative form and ambient installation dialogues
in form of radiant bursts found within the GLOW.



Hedonism, transcendence, utopias (lost and found), idylls and euphoria(s)
explored.



Sunbursts in Arcadian passages, GLOW will again represent short dialogue
driven videos in a traditional cinema-going experience, edited into a
program following the success of the first presentation of GLOW in January
2010 and the installation of video/new media work throughout Z-Bar, Berlin.



Submissions for narrative should exceed no longer than 5-7 mins.

Submissions should be to one of the three curators by March 8th, 2010.



Installation and ambient works will share three monitors throughout Z-Bar on
three separate loops unless a work demands its own requited loop.



GLOW curators are pleased to announce that the large attendance of the GLOW
manifest in January was attended over the course of the evening by over 200
visitors and has generated much excitement.



GLOW will be presented on Berlin Gallery Weekend in Mitte, central Berlin,
April 30th-May 2nd, 2010 and expects a large patronage of artists, curators
and collectors and the general public alike.
