Lebanon Image In All The People - A Photo Album

A collection of snapshots tracing the reality of everyday lives of the Lebanese.

In the glare of the recent war, when the world’s press cameras were trained on vistas of destruction and despair, the reality of everyday life for ordinary Lebanese people was absent. What constitutes normality in times of upheaval and how can this be conveyed in an image?

Lebanon - Image in all the People incorporates both long and short-term memory, a ‘bi-focal’ approach that allows for a more nuanced and complex self-portrait to emerge.

Through the use of disposable and digital cameras or even mobile phones, or by delving into their most cherished and intimate photographic mementoes chosen from family albums, the contributors to the photo album have captured images revealing of a reality that go beyond any narrow political and journalistic agendas.

Lebanon - Image in all the People was realised by Mai Ghoussoub and Souheil Sleiman

We thank all the individuals who took photographs and those who sent us pictures from their family albums, Monika Slim and Ghalia Daher of UMAM D&R who co-ordinated contributors and equipment in Beirut, Gilbert Hage, Firas Zbib and to Sara Basma at Dar Al Saqi, Beirut.
